Is there a metro or subway in Transport Fever 3?
Not a full one. Asked about a subway on the official website, UG Sam of Urban Games answered on November 4, 2025: Transport Fever 3 has underground stations for trams, not a full subway or metro system. You can build a whole underground line with them, but it is not quite a proper subway.
Dedicated tram tracks can run above ground and below it. Light Rail trams can also leave the street and carry on along the railway, so an underground tram line can link up with your trains' tracks. Which trams can do that is in the tram guide.
How to build an underground tram line
Each step says where it comes from: Official means the manual or Urban Games, Players means at least two players in separate posts, linked under player reports.
- Wait for 1970. The underground station first appears in 1970. Start a free game in 1970 or later to have it from day one. (Players)
- Dig the tunnel. The tram track tool has its own underground mode switch, so you can extend lines below the surface without fighting the buildings and streets above. (Official) Underground mode, switched on in the left panel while you build or with the G key, shows tunnels so you can work on them. While it is on, new streets and tracks do not connect to the ones above ground; switch it off to connect them. (Official) When a track or street runs far enough below the ground, the game suggests a tunnel, and a tunnel costs more the deeper it goes. (Official)
- Place the stations. It sits with the bus and tram stops in the road station menu, and its stairs stand on the street above the platform. (Players)
- Give both ends a way to turn. Trams cannot reverse. A line that just ends gets a No Tram Line error, so give each end a loop, for example around a block, or run the line as a circle. (Players) At a street crossing, the Crossing Tool can add a small tram U-turn: switch the tool from cars to trams in the bottom left corner first. (Players)
- Plan where cargo trams stop. Underground stations take passengers only. Cargo trams can drive through the tunnels, but they cannot load or unload at those stations. (Players)
- Carry on along the railway. Trams marked Light Rail can cross over between railway tracks and the tram lanes on streets. (Official) These tram-trains change how they drive with the track: on the street they keep to the street rules, on rail they obey signals like any train. (Official)
Tunnels and bridges for streets and tracks are covered in the roads guide, and putting trams on a line in the line manager guide.
What players report
Urban Games has not written these down, but at least two players say the same in separate posts on the Steam forum. They may change with an update.

- Underground lines are hard to see and edit from the normal view; turn on underground mode with G before you change them. (post 1, October 6, 2026, post 2, October 8, 2026)
Player reports, not yet verified
Only one player has said these so far, so treat them with care:
- One player reports that the tram depot has to stay above ground, so trams from an underground line climb to the surface to reach it. (post, October 2, 2026)
- One player unloads cargo below ground with an ordinary bus stop placed on a street that runs through a tunnel. (post, October 9, 2026)
- One player counted 6,000,000 to build one underground station on Very Hard. (post, October 6, 2026)
Trains, maglev and mods
The underground stations are made for trams; Urban Games has not mentioned underground stations for mainline trains. Urban Games has no plans to add maglev trains, though mod makers can. Mods come from the mod browser in the game; how it works is in the mods guide.
What the official pages do not say
- What an underground station costs to build and to run: every figure on this page comes from players.
- Whether Urban Games plans a full subway or underground stations for mainline trains.
- Whether cargo trams will one day be able to load and unload underground.
Frequently asked questions
Does Transport Fever 3 have a metro or subway?
Not a full one. In a reply on the official website on November 4, 2025, UG Sam of Urban Games explained: Transport Fever 3 has underground stations for trams, not a full subway or metro system. You can build a whole underground line with them, but it is not quite a proper subway.
When do underground stations unlock in Transport Fever 3?
Players report that the underground station first appears in 1970. A free game can start in any decade from 1900 to 2020, so start in 1970 or later to have it from day one.
How do you build underground in Transport Fever 3?
Underground mode, switched on in the left panel while you build or with the G key, shows tunnels so you can work on them. While it is on, new streets and tracks do not connect to the ones above ground; switch it off to connect them. When a track or street runs far enough below the ground, the game suggests a tunnel, and a tunnel costs more the deeper it goes.
Why does my tram line say No Tram Line?
Players report that trams cannot reverse, so a line that simply ends cannot be run. Give each end a loop, for example around a block, or run the line as a circle. At a street crossing, the Crossing Tool can add a small tram U-turn: switch the tool from cars to trams in the bottom left corner first.
Can cargo trams use underground stations?
Players report that they cannot: underground stations take passengers only. Cargo trams can drive through the tunnels, but they cannot load or unload at those stations.
Can trains use underground stations in Transport Fever 3?
The underground stations are for trams, and Urban Games has not mentioned underground stations for mainline trains. Trams marked Light Rail can cross over between railway tracks and the tram lanes on streets. These tram-trains change how they drive with the track: on the street they keep to the street rules, on rail they obey signals like any train.
Will Transport Fever 3 get maglev trains?
Urban Games has no plans to add maglev trains, though mod makers can.
