How to install and switch on mods
- Mods, maps and name lists can come from the Mod Hub. The game keeps what you download from it in a mod.io folder and manages that folder itself, so the manual advises against changing files there.
- To install a mod by hand, put its folder in the mods folder inside your user data folder.
- Mods are switched on when you set up a Free Game: its fourth and last step is a Mods page, where Add Mods lists the mods and the Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Pack content you can activate.
- For a game you already saved, open Load Game and use the settings icon on its card. If the save allows it, you can change its gameplay settings and its list of mods there.
Besides vehicles and buildings, mods can bring extra map generators, lists of town and resident names, and whole custom economies with their own industries. If the Load Game button stays greyed out, the save most likely needs a mod that is missing.
Mods switching themselves on in rare cases was fixed in Version 40417 on the Steam preview branch; see updates and patch notes.
Where the mods folder is
The mods folder sits inside your user data folder. The game opens that folder for you under Settings › Advanced › Open User Data Folder. Otherwise:
- Steam on Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user-number>\3493540\local - Steam on Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local - Steam on macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local - GOG or Epic on Windows:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3 - GOG on Linux:
~/.local/share/Transport Fever 3 - GOG or Epic on macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Transport Fever 3
Install locations can differ. Under Steam, <user-number> is the numbered folder of your Steam account; <username> is your user name on the computer. On macOS the Library folder is hidden in Finder by default. Next to it, mod_presets keeps your mod presets, and staging_area is where mod makers work before uploading to the Mod Hub. Leave the game's installation folder alone: it holds the game's own data and built-in mods, and updates may reset it.
Downloads from the Mod Hub go to a separate mod.io folder. Listed in the manual's Steam section.
- Windows:
C:\Users\Public\mod.io\10640\mods - Linux:
~/mod.io/common/10640/mods/ - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/mod.io/common/
What the manual does not say
- Cheat codes or console commands. The manual lists none.
- Which gameplay settings count as the standard values that keep achievements on.
- Which mods count as cosmetic, so that achievements stay on.
- Whether the Steam Workshop is used. The manual only describes the Mod Hub and the mods folder.
- How to earn every star and medal, mission by mission, in the campaign.
Frequently asked questions
Are there cheats in Transport Fever 3?
The manual lists no cheat codes or console commands. What players use instead are the four mods that ship with the game: Vehicles: No End Year (vehicles you can buy lose their end year: once a vehicle becomes available, it stays available), Sandbox Mode (edit your money, jump the calendar to any date, add or remove towns and industries, and change cargo demand and town size), No Costs (turns money off: everything is free and the balance shows as infinite), and Tycoon (puts the company at the highest rank with every perk unlocked; nothing else changes).
Do mods disable achievements in Transport Fever 3?
Usually, yes. Achievements are generally unavailable while non-cosmetic mods are active or when gameplay settings differ from the standard values.
How do I install mods in Transport Fever 3?
Mods, maps and name lists can come from the Mod Hub. The game keeps what you download from it in a mod.io folder and manages that folder itself, so the manual advises against changing files there. To install a mod by hand, put its folder in the mods folder inside your user data folder. Mods are switched on when you set up a Free Game: its fourth and last step is a Mods page, where Add Mods lists the mods and the Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Pack content you can activate.
Where is the mods folder?
In your user data folder, which the game opens for you under Settings › Advanced › Open User Data Folder. With Steam on Windows that folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user-number>\3493540\local, and the mods go in its mods subfolder.
How many achievements are there?
41: 4 campaign, 11 first time, 12 on one map, 10 across your games, and 4 just for fun. Every one except the campaign achievements is earned in a Free Game.
Can I use the Tycoon mod to get Career Ladder?
It would put you at the top rank, but the Tycoon mod is a gameplay mod, and the manual says achievements are generally unavailable with non-cosmetic mods. Reach the highest title the normal way instead.
Why is the Load Game button greyed out?
If the Load Game button stays greyed out, the save most likely needs a mod that is missing. For a game you already saved, open Load Game and use the settings icon on its card. If the save allows it, you can change its gameplay settings and its list of mods there.
Can I add Deluxe Edition content to my game?
Yes, it is switched on like a mod. Mods are switched on when you set up a Free Game: its fourth and last step is a Mods page, where Add Mods lists the mods and the Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Pack content you can activate. For a game you already saved, open Load Game and use the settings icon on its card. If the save allows it, you can change its gameplay settings and its list of mods there.
